Tips for writing for the web (July'07)
1 Jul 2007
It's hard to remember a time when the World Wide Web wasn't a normal part of our everyday lives. With most companies boasting their own websites, effective online communications is becoming evermore important.

Follow our top 10 tips below to keep the content of your website exciting, relevant and appealing to your audience.

1. Nothing helps deliver your message more than plain English. Try to keep your sentences simple and easy to read.

2. Avoid using jargon and hype. Keep your writing clear and objective.

3. Try to avoid italics and different fonts. Remember, plain is best.

4. Break text into small chunks and avoid lengthy paragraphs. Large blocks of text are hard to digest on screen.

5. Follow the 'inverted pyramid' structure when writing news releases. Always start off with the most important idea so the reader will understand the piece even if he or she only reads the first paragraph.

6. Provide sub-headings for each section of writing. That way the reader can skim-read.

7. Navigation on websites is key. Make it easy for the reader to skip between pages and go back to your homepage by using hyperlinks.

8. Make sure your website is up-to-date. A website that doesn't appear to be regularly updated leaves a bad impression. Try to keep news releases fresh and current.

9. Add an outside search link such as Google to your website. This gives you credibility in the reader's mind.

10. Keep regular checks that your website is fully functioning. If your website is slow to load many readers will lose patience and go elsewhere!
